Border Dance

After reading detailed reports of girls ages 10-13 being raped in Honduras one wonders how to ever protect them. More than just a few of these girls are being impregnated and delivering children. The downward spiral of poverty, drugs, gangs and guns makes Honduras the deadliest county on earth.

To quiet Mr Trump, Mexico is sending 6,000 troops to its border with Guatemala. Presumably, the troops will stop refugees from entering Mexico to begin their walk north. After being turned back one wonders where these folks will go, and what they will do. Is there anyplace to which they can return?

There are millions of stories of Latin Americans fleeing. Their only hope is to go north, through Mexico. But the north doesn’t want them and it seems the US will be successful in keeping them out.

Solutions? No idea. But one wonders how Congress can appropriate $19 billion for storm and farmer relief and not approve a couple of billions to somehow employ the Hondurans in their own country. So they stay there. And want to stay there. The US cannot, however, no matter how much we try, be the earth’s protector.

At the end of the day it seems Latin America will forever be a land of mismanagement, fraud, graft, crime and drugs.
