Doubt-the film

My wife and I smirked and snorted at some of the lines by the nun played by Meryl Streep. Both of us recall the stern looks, the blind obedience demanded and the harsh, unloving manner by our respective grade school principals. Doubt was probably a great play in its original form. It is a very good movie. It is, however, the kind of movie that makes one want to see some other film right away, a happy film. There are cute moments here but the consequences of actions taken by Streep’s character casts a pall. Philip Seymour Hoffman triumphs again and is rapidly becoming my favorite actor. He has a magical ability of becoming the person he is portraying. Streep has long been my favorite actress and she doesn’t disappoint here. Amy Adams, as Sister James, swept me away with both her beauty and sensitivity.

This is a complex film and one is left with just what the author wanted; doubt. Do go but make a date to see something else right away, like Despereaux, for example.
