The Markets
- Tim Geithner had best watch his step or he may be accused of moving markets. Seriously, the boy is beginning to say all the right things.
- After a sloppy opening and some tough guidance from companies before the opening we heard better news. United Tech suggested things were calming down and they could at least try to figure out the future.

I have known Jim since high school. We lost contact with each other for only forty-five years and then re-united last fall at a reunion. We communicate by email often and ‘phone less so. But we have been able to re-establish a friendship after almost half a century. He wrote to me today about the market (he trades more than I), the Atlantic Monthly article and regarding my crack on gun use in this country. When I asked permission to reprint the note he told me to get my own material.
Rick
Thanks for the heads-up on the Atlantic article. I started the article yesterday on my new Kindle, which I just got and love. It’s wonderful. I will definitely finish it now, but it sure resonated with me, even half way through. There was also a piece on 60 minutes exposing the abuses by Wall Street of 401k plans. You shouldnt’ miss it.
I got killed yesterday on financials. Thank Zeus I didn’t sell anything. (Usually, my relief is that I DID sell). I got it all back.
You make a good point about our second amendment, but it’s too late now to put the genie back in the bottle. The guns are out there. And the lobby is so powerful that even Obama can’t touch it, lest he risk his entire administration and the critical issues that need to be addressed.
But there is one thing we CAN do: thorough background checks on ALL gun buyers, whether bought from a private party, gun dealer or at a gun show. For example, the ________ who shot the cops in Pittsburgh was thrown out of the Marines for attacking his drill sergeant, and his ex-girlfriend had a restraining order against him.
NEITHER OFFENSE showed up on the cursory check done by the gun dealer he bought from, because of legal loopholes in the laws.
It seems to me that even the gun-loving right wouldn’t object to stronger background checking (athough I’m sure some will)
Hope you’re doing well. Love your blog.
